Special Shoutout to the EMOs!

Guess what. The emo genre was behind it all, all along. Thankfully!

DarkSpectacle (previously known as DarkSceneGames), would not exist without the emo genre. It had its origins in the year 2008, as a site that brought together games themed around dark or otherwise alternative scenes.

It sprung to life thanks to a character called Emo Annie, who many could resonate with and who, therefore, inspired the creation of even more works under the emo genre. Then, it was only the first of various other genres that DarkSceneGames came to encompass as an online arcade portal.

In the words of back then, DarkSceneGames was basically a:
“Free, online arcade portal featuring a large and growing collection of dark games - including themes such as Emo, Punk, Rock, Goth… and more! Browse, play, discuss, and hang out!”

Today, with much nostalgia and sentimentalism, it is being brought back to life. But, as DarkSpectacle, it will not return the same from the afterlife. What back then was part of a wave, now is a committed effort to preserve and honor the culture around the 2000s, particularly the dark and alternative.

If your heart is black or blackened, you might get what this is about, where this is coming from, and why and how it is important. Emos (now elder emos), you sat with the pain and suffering that the rest of the world was, wilfully or not, blind to. And history repeats itself when we don’t learn from it and turn our backs on it.

I hope that, at the least, I can bring you some comfort - as you have brought me.

With love,
a 4ever emo kid and elder emo.
